Diving into a Digital Universe - Part 3
When my father first delved into the realm of digital reading through his Kindle, I was genuinely surprised at how effortlessly he adapted to it. He found the experience so enjoyable that he decided to re-read Anna Karenina, finding it lighter and more accessible in its digital form than ever before. This revelation sparked a new perspective on digital reading for me, challenging my previous skepticism.
It's worth noting that while the Kindle has received accolades as a dream come true for readers, there is another popular yet affordable alternative: smartphones. However, recent findings from Publishing Technology highlight one of the significant barriers preventing greater adoption of mobile reading - an inferior user experience. Although this study focused on users in the US and UK, these insights are relevant to other countries' publishers, booksellers, and e-reading platform providers as well.
As we navigate through this period of digital transformation for reading, it's intriguing to see how diverse groups adapt and evolve alongside the medium. My aunt’s cook recently added me as a fri on Facebook and has been sharing numerous Tamil articles, showcasing her engagement with digital content beyond traditional formats.
Renowned author Margaret Atwood, who is celebrated by The Guardian as literature's digital doyenne, provided insightful commentary in an interview last year. She noted how the internet drives towards literacy, enabling information exchange across regions where physical libraries, bookstores, or schools might be limited. Even for someone like her, aged 75, she leverages platforms such as Wattpad and Byliner to interact with readers through innovative digital channels.
The experiences of authors who have embraced technology are quite diverse, from those like Margaret Atwood who have been early adopters, to others who remn cautious about integrating reading and technology. In this third installment of ‘Diving into a Digital Universe,’ we explore how creators of children's stories in India view the evolving form of books and if these changes impact their es.
Nandini Nayar, Author:
I initially approached digital texts with suspicion, assuming they would never replace physical books. However, as someone who grew up reading proper books, my perspective has evolved, and I now consider digital texts as an exciting new medium.
As a writer, the 'aha' moments of discovering great ideas remn magical and unchanged in this age of technology, just like before. The challenge lies in adapting these stories effectively for digital formats. Nandini's experience highlights that while es may need adjustments to accommodate digital mediums, they do not significantly hinder creativity.
Priya Kuriyan, Illustrator:
The e-book and physical book are two distinct products that offer different pleasures; thus, I believe neither will replace the other.
Priya emphasizes that the visualization process differs for screen-based creations compared to traditional print media. Moreover, she appreciates the unique aspects of each format - from the absence of concerns over color correction or paper quality in e-books to the tangible experience provided by physical books.
